Tensions are escalating in advance of Saturday’s “Day of Sun” in North Korea, a national holiday during which the leaders have typically tested nuclear weapons and missiles as a show of military strength.
This year, concerns that Kim Jong-un may conduct a sixth nuclear test in defiance of UN sanctions have become a global distraction. President Donald Trump tweeted “I have great confidence that China will properly deal with North Korea. If they are unable to do so, the U.S., with its allies, will! U.S.A.”
The Hermit Kingdom’s dictator, Kim Jong-un, has forced the immediate evacuation of 600,000 people from Pyongyang, the capitol of North Korea. That is 25% of the city’s population.
Meanwhile China has sent at least 150,000 military troops to the North Korean border to assist with potential refugees and other potential incidents.
The BBC reports that Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, said: “Lately, tensions have risen between on the one hand the United States and the Republic of Korea [South Korea] and on the other, the DPRK [North Korea] and one has the feeling that a conflict could break out at any moment.
“I think that all relevant parties should be highly vigilant with regards to this situation.
“We call on all parties to refrain from provoking and threatening each other, whether in words or actions, and not let the situation get to an irreversible and unmanageable stage,” he added.
